We have big brains here at Bucketworks, and are showing them off with a Geeky Halloween Haunted House this weekend! Halloween approaches and we are celebrating with a haunted house on November 1st & 2nd! Saturday night is for the grown ups with 2 more performances of the Night of the Living Dead Zombie Puppet Show and music from DJ's Tronathan and DFP (Dork Factor Prime aka Kevron) but on Sunday bring your kids between 2:00 - 6:00! We'll be building robot costumes and holding a robot parade.
Then, we'll flex our big brains some more later this month with monthly meetings from our friends at Spreenkler and Web414. Also, on November 21st we'll be hosting a special event, MilwaukeeDevHouse3, where programmers come together to celebrate their art for an evening.
We want to know what you think! Bucketworks is holding a poll to decide on our open hours once the cafe re-opens in early December. Visit bucketworks.org to cast your vote now! Speaking of voting, don't forget to vote on November 4 and then come down to Bucketworks for the Election Watch Party.
So, what's going on around here?
Thursday, October 30 7:00pm Milwaukee Web Design Meetup So you've made the jump to using CSS layouts, but every once in a while (or every day) you find that something doesn't work right in some browser (or all of them). You have stared at the code and at the browser screen for two hours and haven't gotten anywhere. Enter Firebug, the add-on for Mozilla Firefox. At our October Meetup, Steve Robinson will demo some techniques anyone can use to figure out where that extra space came from or why your right column is underneath your left column. Join us to share your CSS tools, best practices, tips, techniques and horror stories.
Saturday, November 1 4:00pm & Sunday, November 2 2:00pm Bucketworks Haunted House Join us for the only Haunted House in the city proper! A cacaphony of frightening frights, kids big and small build-your-own-robot and march in the robot parade, come see the zombie puppet show!
Sunday, November 9 4:00pm Into the Fire and Souls Without Borders This special documentary screening is co-hosted by the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) in New York, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting public awareness, research, and discussion about the Spanish Civil War and the American volunteers who risked their lives to fight fascism in Spain. With special guest speaker.
Tuesday, November 4 6:30pm Election Night Watch Party Let's get together on November 4th and celebrate democracy! It is shaping up to be a long night no matter what the polls say.
Wednesday, November 5 5:30pm Spreenkler November Meeting Spreenkler welcomes Tim Dixon and Brigette Breitenbach from Milwaukee's brand new Iron Horse Hotel (theironhorsehotel.com). They will share the inspiration behind the renovation of the hotel and how they differentiate by catering to their customer's desires! After the presentation we will head over to the Iron Horse for a behind-the-scenes tour!
Tuesdays, beginning November 9 7:30pm Actor's Craft Improv Technique The spontaneity of improvisation improves your listening and reacting skills. It requires your intellectual, physical, and intuitive involvement which brings to light your unique characteristics. By identifying and honing these unique qualities, you can learn to bring your self to your acting work and create rich characters with vibrant relationships in your scenes.
Thursday, November 13 7:00pm Web414 November Meeting Robb Myers from NetSonic will talk about how virtualization has taken the burden of managing a hosted server off of the customer and put it on the hosting company. It will also cover the benefits of resources, "crash" resistance, near seamless hardware upgrades and disaster recovery in hours rather than days.
Friday, November 21 6:00pm MilwaukeeDevHouse3 MilwaukeeDevHouse aims to be the premier regularly scheduled hackathon event that combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere. If you’re a coder, designer, or just someone who enjoys software and technology development, MilwaukeeDevHouse was made for you... MilwaukeeDevHouse is intended for passionate and creative technical people that want to have some fun, learn new things, and meet new people.
